First-time fathers’ experiences and needs during childbirth: A systematic review

Fathers have been increasingly involved in childbirth since 1990. Attendance at is considered to benefit fathers’ health as well that of their partner and children. However, a life event parents may experience differently. First-time experiences barely studied differ from those fathers who already had child. In order adapt support care during the needs first-time fathers, deeper insight must be gained into childbirth. A systematic review qualitative studies was conducted using PubMed, Embase CINAHL snowball method. Quality appraisal performed evaluated Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. thematic best evidence synthesis performed. Of 821 articles, eight data one mixed methods study were included. amongst other feelings, lack knowledge need better prepared. want more guidance, information honest answers help them fulfil supportive role. disregard own focus on mother. Meeting baby for first time changes mother child, privacy this special moment. To professionals aware needs. Professionals realise significant influence professional behaviour experiences. Care should formalised. Follow-up research integrating preparation prenatal care. Education training improved.
